FAQs
- What is the time frame of the shifts?

The length of these shifts is determined by the weekly programming schedule, so each shift might range from one to five hours. Because show times can vary or change, some flexibility in your schedule is preferable.

Flexibility is especially important for January to June as this team schedule occurs during the Festival.

Show times will most definitely change and vary based upon Festival programming.

- Do I have to commit for all six months?
Yes. We understand, however, if something unexpected comes up and you cannot make a shift. Please note that it is your responsibility to find a substitute for your shift. Failure to do so may result in a change of benefits and/or removal from the volunteer program.

- What if I have to miss a shift?
If you miss more than three shifts without finding a replacement, we will have to find someone else to take your place for the rest of the shifts through the end of the commitment. Those who work all their shifts (or find someone to work a shift they can’t make) will receive a Festival pass; those who aren’t able to will receive Cinema vouchers for the time that they’ve put in so far.

- When does SIFF recruit for Cinema Lead Usher Teams?

Volunteer: Early Stage Memory Loss Support Group Facilitator

“It was an opportunity to interact with people at the same stage I was in and it helped me have a greater understanding that I’m not alone. And I don’t feel alone anymore.”

-ESML Program Participant

Join our team and make a difference in the lives of participants!

Our Early Stage Memory Loss(ESML) Support Groups provide an invaluable network that people with memory loss can turn to for advice and encouragement to help them feel socially connected and give them a sense of belonging and purpose. Support Group Facilitators create a space for that important interaction by encouraging conversation and maintaining a positive and caring environment.

Our volunteers continuously learn and grow alongside the participants while serving a population in need of great support. “When I began leading the ESML program, I realized that I did carry a stigma based on a fear of not knowing how to interact with people with memory loss and what to expect from them,” said Melinda an ESML Walk Volunteer. “The greatest thing I’ve learned is that people with memory loss are just people. And even though they have memory loss—they’re here. They may not be able to respond to you the way people without memory loss respond, but when they give you a hug, grab your hand, look you in the eye—they’re here.”

Our Chapter's volunteers receive excellent training, ongoing support, resources, and continuing education opportunities.

Individuals who are often best qualified as support group facilitators include: working or retired social workers, nurse and other healthcare professionals, educators, clergy, counselors, and former family caregivers. Commitment of at least one year is required

Volunteer: Filling voting board member positions within chapter

Our chapter is actively looking for several key leadership positions / new voting board members coming up in 2020. These leadership position needs are as follows:

Women's Initiative Co-Leader (board position) The mission of TU’s Diversity Initiative is to create effective strategies and programs to recruit a more diverse membership profile in TU; encourage diversity within leadership at the chapter, state and national levels; and to ensure every chapter creates a welcoming environment for TU members of different genders, ethnicity, ages, and cultures to achieve the TU conservation mission.
Many chapters may choose to appoint a women’s initiative coordinator, a youth education coordinator and/or a veterans services partnership coordinator to work on these unique initiatives. Some have found value in appointing someone to the umbrella role of diversity coordinator, such that someone is responsible for driving the chapter’s diversity goals forward on a broad level. The Women’s Initiative (WI) Chapter Coordinator provides opportunities for women to engage with TU locally, demonstrating TU’s leadership development. Guided by “the Women’s Initiative Leadership Best Practices – Position Task List & Responsibilities,” the Chapter Coordinator recruits new women members, engages them in TU’s mission, facilitates their retention, and promotes them in leadership roles. This individual actively develops or enhances women’s events at the chapter level, initiates new programs to provide meaningful engagement opportunities for women, facilitates membership drives to increase women membership, and communicates directly to women in the chapter. Once appointed or elected by the chapter board, the WI Chapter Coordinator will have access to all educational/event materials available from the National Leadership Council’s Women’s Initiative Workgroup, support from the Workgroup including access to experienced women in this role, as well as other operational resources found in the online Tacklebox and membership rosters and reports in the Leaders Only Tools section of tu.org. The WI Chapter Coordinator is encouraged to develop an annual WI Plan for the chapter, along with an associated budget. In this annual planning effort, the WI Chapter Coordinator, would be supported by the WI State Coordinator and all resources and shared experience available through the NLC’s Women’s Initiative Workgroup.

Feel free to reach out with any interest in or questions about these positions. Our best contact point is our email, northsountu@gmail.com. Cheers and thanks for looking!

Volunteer: Looking to fill non-voting leadership team roles

There are several positions within our leadership team that will be supportive to our board and instrumental in the operation of our nonprofit moving forward. These positions do not have the same level of commitment as our voting board members do, but definitely help the function of our organization! These positions include (but are not limited) to the following:

Chapter Membership Chair  Many chapters appoint a membership chair whose duties include tracking the membership of the chapter, welcoming new members and encouraging existing members to renew their membership. For many of TU’s fastest growing chapters, the membership chair has taken on a more proactive role of developing and implementing a new member recruitment plan and engaging current members often by being the friendly and familiar face of the leadership at chapter events. The membership chair performs the key role in helping current members resolve membership issues, maintain member’s contact information, and communicates changes or issues with member records with TU national staff. The membership chair also tracks membership numbers within the chapter (using the roster and membership reports found within the Leaders Only Tools), welcomes new members who join, and follows up with members who have not renewed. Beyond tracking these statistics, the membership chair takes the lead on programs to recruit new members. Chapter Meeting Coordinator  This leadership position will help coordinate monthly events / meetings and act as a point person between President, Secretary, and Media Relations chair. Duties in this position include reaching out to potential guest speakers to help schedule presentations and coordinate with venues for monthly chapter events. Often this information needs to be shared to both Secretary and Media Relations chair in order to send out newsletters and update social media with calendar events as plans are solidified. This person will also help setup for these meetings and breakdown after

At this time, JFS is most especially in need of Russian speakers for this opportunity. If you do not speak Russian, that's OK. There may still be opportunities.

The Friendly Visitor helps Jewish Family Service to ensure the strength and survival of the most vulnerable in our community.

Volunteer: A CASTING CALL FOR NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Tiny Trees Preschool
Board of Directors Opportunity

Are you:
       • Passionate about early education and the environment?
       • Interested in serving on a non-profit board in Seattle?
Tiny Trees makes high-quality early learning accessible for working families by operating
outdoor preschool classrooms in our public parks. As the largest outdoor preschool provider in
the United States, we currently serve more than 300 children at 9 parks in Seattle and King
County. These kids gain the academic and social-emotional skills to thrive in school and life,
while reaping the benefits of a nature-rich childhood.

Tiny Trees’ commitment to equity, environmental stewardship, and high-quality early learning
is what makes it unique. Our classrooms and our stellar teachers enable children from all
backgrounds to reap the benefits of outdoor early education. Our innovative model, utilizing
public parks in the community, means that Tiny Trees can open classrooms in neighborhoods
where families have not always had access to affordable, high-quality preschool. Currently, 22%
of Tiny Trees students speak a language other than English at home and about half receive free
or reduced tuition through the Seattle Preschool Program and our philanthropic partners.

Want to help Tiny Trees Preschool grow?

We are seeking new board members who can commit to a three-year term, beginning January or
June 2020. If you are passionate about our mission and want to strengthen our organization to better
serve our community, let’s talk.

to families and communities of color in our region, are skilled in HR, technology, law, marketing or
fundraising, and/or have experience in early learning or environmental education.

community with key stakeholders, including current and prospective families, donors,
service providers and partners and governmental agencies
Commitment of Individual Tiny Trees Preschool Board Members:
     - Each member should be prepared to invest an average of 6-10 hours per month, which
typically includes: 3 hours to prepare for and attend Board meetings (11 per year, last
Tuesday of each month from 6-8:30pm), 2-4 hours for committee work (per committee),
and during certain months, members spend additional hours on special tasks, meetings,
and events, such as the annual board retreat and annual fundraising luncheon

development, or operational excellence)
     - Participate in the upcoming strategic planning process

significant gift that reflects that priority.

If you are passionate about early learning, social justice and environmental stewardship, please
consider joining the Tiny Trees Board of Directors. It’s a meaningful way to ensure that all
children in King County gain the social, emotional, and academic skills needed for kindergarten
and a lifetime of success. You will benefit from being part of an active, hands-on board with

Volunteer: AUBURN, Give rides to change lives, drive a senior in need!

Seniors need your help! Getting to the doctor’s office is a daunting task for many local seniors. Poor vision or medical conditions prevent them from driving; limited mobility makes it impossible to take the bus; taxis come with prohibitive costs; and loved ones have full-time jobs that render them unavailable to help. So who do they turn to? Fortunately, volunteer drivers can fill the gap.

Volunteer Transportation is a program of Sound Generations, a non-profit organization working to help seniors remain safely independent and connected to their communities. Every week, there are a growing number of older adults in need of transportation but not enough volunteers to do it all.  It is heartbreaking to know that for many, the only barrier to accessing medical care is just a ride.

Volunteer: Take Your Compassion to the Road! Drive Seniors In Need

Volunteers needed to drive older adults to their medical appointments

One of the biggest barriers seniors face in accessing medical care is lack of transportation. Poor vision or medical conditions prevent them from driving, limited mobility makes it impossible to take the bus, taxis come with prohibitive costs, and loved ones have full-time jobs that render them unavailable to help. Yet, since 1975, Sound Generations Volunteer Transportation has served as a trustworthy resource for older adults throughout King County. With its force of kind and reliable volunteers, the program provides the missing link between seniors and their necessary medical care.

But the value of Volunteer Transportation extends far beyond the rides themselves. A volunteer driver serves as a friendly escort-- a companion-- someone to talk to along the way. Volunteers turn previously stressful ordeals into pleasant, meaningful experiences.

More volunteer drivers are needed throughout King County! The program is currently unable to serve all seniors in need of transportation.

You can help more seniors get “on the road” to improved health and peace of mind! If you have a reliable vehicle, a clean driving record, and some weekday availability, this is the role for you!

NOTE: Although this post says the opportunity is based in Seattle, volunteers are needed in communities throughout King County.

Volunteer: Provide Childcare on Monday evenings in Renton

Vision House is a Christian social service agency based near Seattle, Washington. Since 1990, Vision House has provided housing, support services and child care for homeless families with children.

Volunteers will spend time with Vision House resident children - playing games, reading books, doing crafts. All activities will be planned in advance so volunteers will show up each week and have fun. These activities may seem simple, but without individuals to care for and spend time with the children, then the parents cannot attend crucial life skills training classes.

Vision House is a Christian organization. We ask that, even if you do not share our beliefs, you respect them. While we do not have any mandatory spiritual activities for our residents, we do ask volunteers working in direct contact with residents to sign our statement of faith.

Volunteers must also fill out all necessary paperwork and attend training/orientation with the volunteer coordinator and child advocate. CPR/First aid training is a plus. The minimum age for this opportunity is 16 years and older.

Volunteer: Enumclaw, Do You Want to Make a Difference in the Lives of Seniors?

Are you looking for something fun to do... do you like to drive... do you want to make a difference and help people? Volunteer driving is an opportunity to help seniors in your community. You can control the amount of time you want to be involved. Most volunteers drive once a week, some twice a week, others every other week. We are very flexible and will work with your schedule.

Using your own vehicle, you would help older adults maintain their independence by taking them to much needed medical appointments. Clients greatly appreciate their improved access to medical care, meaningful interactions with caring volunteers, and increased peace of mind. Unfortunately, the program does not have enough drivers to meet the growing demand for transportation from King County seniors.

Our volunteer drivers do a lot more than drive! By volunteering with Sound Generations Volunteer Transportation Program, drivers not only provide needed transportation but companionship for both the senior and the volunteer.

We really need YOU! Help make a huge difference in the lives of seniors near you by becoming a volunteer driver.

For more information please click the "respond" button and we will follow up with you!

Volunteer: Federal Way Volunteer Drivers in Demand

Volunteer Transportation is a program of Sound Generations, a non-profit organization working to help seniors remain safely independent and connected to their communities. Every week, there are a growing number of older adults in need of transportation but not enough volunteers to do it all. It is heartbreaking to know that for many, the only barrier to accessing medical care is just a ride away.

Help make a huge difference in the lives of seniors near you by becoming a volunteer driver. This opportunity is extremely flexible, allowing volunteers to pick the days, times, frequency, and areas they wish to drive. Help more seniors get "on the road" to improved health and peace of mind by becoming a volunteer today!

For more information please click the "respond" button and we will follow up with you!

"You have done wonders for my life. I would not have been able to stay in my own home for as long as I have without your help. Thank you for all you do." Jeanne, 84

Volunteer: Folk Musicians

Help us bring Tacoma’s birthplace to life through interactive learning for elementary students and our community. Musical performers showcase songs that interpret life on the Oregon Trail and in Puget Sound during the mid-1800s.

Job Carr Cabin Museum hosts over 40 school groups each year. We rely on musical performers to engage elementary school children in learning about frontier life. Musicians may choose to incorporate singing, storytelling, circle dancing, square dancing and/or folk dance. Museum staff can assist with research and reference materials. Other performers have used guitar, ukulele, mandolin, dulcimer, fiddle, harmonica and/or drums.

School field trip presentations are generally scheduled on weekday mornings. Special events are usually scheduled during afternoons, evenings and weekends. Performance times vary from 15min to 2hrs. Multiple opportunities are available.

We welcome volunteers of all ages, interests and skill levels. Volunteers with experience in music, theater, education, teaching, history, and storytelling are strongly encouraged to apply. Stipends may be available. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application form and successfully pass a security background check.
